An example of universal design in engineering is voice recognition technology. Voice recognition technology allows users to interact with devices and systems using their voice. This innovation has some implications for learning design. For example, by adding voice recognition technology into educational settings, students with physical disabilities or those who struggle with typing or writing can participate in learning activities. Voice-activated alternatives can be used for tasks such as note-taking.
Another example of universal design in engineering that can inspire learning design is the development of adjustable-height desks. Although it may not seem like a big deal, adjustable-height desks can accommodate people of different heights or those with disabilities, allowing them to easily adjust the desk’s height to a comfortable position. This engineering idea promotes accessibility in the workspace by eliminating physical barriers and enabling individuals to work in a way that suits them. This is an example of learning design as it’s creating learning environments that cater to the diverse needs of students. Adding adjustable desks or flexible seating options in classrooms will allow students to learn comfortably regardless of their physical abilities. It is not just desks, another example could be adjustable or adaptable furniture. Adjustable furniture is designed to allow people to be comfortable by being able to customize the height, angle, and other things regarding the furniture. This design approach recognizes that people have different bodies, abilities, and comfort levels, Just as adjustable furniture promotes comfort and accessibility, adaptable learning design can foster engagement, motivation, and success for all learners.
These examples of universal design in engineering can be used as inspiration in learning design and can have long lasting positive effects on the education system. Interestingly, these examples were ideas I contracted from ChatGPT, which is the essence of our whole project; the power of ChatGPT. I typed in a prompt that allowed me to contract these ideas “Give an example of universal design in engineering and explain how it can be used as inspiration for a learning design.” I elaborated on them in my own words and wrote about the implications they could have on the education system. In our project, we will be discovering how useful ChatGPT is, and how far you can go with it, as I demonstrated in this post.
